Here is a picture of two Lemire sisters (about 1940-50). The sister on the left I assume is Amanda (Dupont). The other sister living at that time was Florida Maria, who was a that time a Nun. The sister on the right is Beatrice Evangeline.Their parents were Zacharie Lemire and Marie Louise Pepin. Zacharie and Marie had 12 children-6 boys and 6 girls. Amanda was the second born, while Beatrice was the youngest.
Grandma Beatrice "Mere" was married to Harvey Vernon Brockway in 1918 (Letellier, Manitoba, Canada) and had three children; Frank, Leo, and Pearl. In 1959, Mere married George Oliver Woodford in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mere died in November 1985.
I remember Mere as short and thin (a petite 4' 9"), having a french-canadian accent and an amazing positive approach to everything. Grandpa George loved her very much. Mere had a three foot tall doll. I remember my sister wanting to play with it. Grandpa George gave it to her after he found out that she had never had a doll of her own.
Thanks to Frank Brockway, we have now an audio history of Mere in MP3 format to download to hear some of her memories.

Thank's for sharing your memories of Mere. I don't remember her at all. I do remember Gpa Georage. I remember his house was very clean cold and we were not allowed to touch anything.
ReplyDeleteWow, I just accidentally found this and wanted to thank you for posting.
ReplyDeleteAlso, to let you know that I was with my father when he made the recordings of Grandma Mère and Grandpa George, and I remember the stories.
Also to correct you on the French word "Mère". Her children called her Mère, and the grandchildren called her Grandma Mère. In French, "Mère" means Mother, "grand-maman" is grandma and "grandmère" is grandmother -- So it was merely a mix of english and french.
It was while I served my mission in Paris France -- Mère passed away, just 2 days prior to President Kimball's passing. I think I still have an audio recording of her funeral which my father sent to me -- if I can dig it out. I also have a handwritten account of hers which he also sent to me at that time.

It is always good to hear from family and to receive their contributions (and corrections if needed).
